Culinary notes:
Vibrantly red in colour, Ethiopian Berbere is a staple blend of the cuisine, providing a backbone of flavour to many regional dishes with its delicate yet powerful combination of fenugreek, ginger and garlic, cinnamon and a piquant hit of chilli powder. The name ‘Berbere’ derives from the Ethiopian word Barbare meaning ‘hot’ which originally stems from the Ancient Ethiopian word for pepper ‘papare’. Use to make Ethiopia’s national dish ‘Wat’ (curry) or add a sprinkling to meat, vegetables or grains to add a fiery hit and warm red hue. Is Berbere spicy?
The combination of peppers in Berbere makes it a traditionally hot blend, we dialled down the heat to medium to make it more family-friendly.
Can I make this dish milder?
Although Berbere is hot, you can tone it down slightly by either adding a little less than the recipe says or countering it with extra yoghurt or coconut milk, stock, or lemon juice.
What can I serve with Berbere?
We love it served alongside our Ethiopian Minced Greens (steps on how to make at the bottom of each recipe page) and some fluffy rice, or you could go the traditional route and eat it with some fluffy Injera
